New MAXAIRTM suspension Combines Hendrickson and Mack Technology for Improved Performanace, Reduced Weight and Less Maintenence

WOODRIDGE, IL - The new MaxAirTM Series of suspensions from Mack Trucks, Inc. are now available on all CH and Vision by MackTM model tractors. Design teams at Hendrickson International and Mack jointly developed MaxAir to improve comfort, durability and serviceability, while reducing weight, life cycle costs and maintenance.

The first of the series, the 40,000-lb. MaxAir 40, is scheduled for full production by mid-year. Additional capacities and configurations will be introduced throughout the year.

According to Roger Jable, director of engineering, Hendrickson Truck Suspension Systems, advanced design techniques and extensive suspension experience allowed engineers at Hendrickson and Mack to optimize the size and location of key components, such as the large air springs carrying a greater share of the load for a better ride and inboard shocks tucked in close to the axle for better ground clearance. The overall geometry also reduces the sensitivity to driveline vibrations. "The MaxAir accomplishes a combination of goals. It reduces weight, complexity and maintenance requirements. Yet at the same time, the suspension offers enhanced performance and toughness," added Jable.

Hendrickson and Mack extensively tested the MaxAir suspension over thousands of miles to ensure customer satisfaction through peak performance. Additionally, the suspension provides exceptional smoothness and handling. And when it comes to weight, the MaxAir delivers a savings of 72 lbs. in the standard configuration vs. the already lightweight ALIV incumbent. The optional aluminum bracketry makes it the lightest air suspension available on the market, providing an additional savings of 40 lbs.

"Our engineering teams eliminated the cross channel used in traditional designs with an offset in the main support member by working with Hendrickson Spring Division to utilize the latest technology," said Jable. "This new single leaf main support member with integral redundancy was important for light weight."

Jable added, "This is going to make the MaxAir very popular for weight sensitive applications because the weight saved with this suspension will translate into bigger payloads and more money on every run."

A key element of the MaxAir is a design and development breakthrough to reduce maintenance requirements and significantly increase the reliability of the axle connection. The design team eliminated the need for regular re-torquing of clamp u-bolts by replacing the conventional clamped brackets with welded integrated axle brackets (patent pending) unique and badly needed in the industry.

The new simplified frame bracket design also reduces maintenance requirements in the MaxAir by incorporating a new alignment system that utilizes technology from the Hendrickson Trailer Division. The new assembly allows for faster, easier and more precise suspension alignment changes, while eliminating the need for shims.

"The MaxAir was designed specifically to address the needs and issues facing today's operators," said Jable. "It adds in-cab comfort, which is essential in retaining tough-to-get drivers. The better ride also improves cargo protection. As a result, the MaxAir suspension is going to help fleets improve their operational efficiency--and their reputations with their customers."
